The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has released the schedule for the Asia Cup 2023, which will be held in Pakistan and Sri Lanka from August 30 to September 17. The highly anticipated match between India and Pakistan will take place on September 2 in Kandy.
India, being the seven-time champions of the tournament, will face their arch-rivals Pakistan in what promises to be an exciting clash. The tournament opener on August 30 in Multan will see Pakistan taking on Nepal.
The participating teams have been divided into two groups. Group A comprises Pakistan, India, and Nepal, while Group B consists of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. The format of the tournament will involve the top two teams from each group advancing to the Super Four stage, where they will compete for a spot in the final.
The Asia Cup has been played alternatively in the ODI and T20I formats since 2016, aligning with the upcoming world events' format. However, this edition of the tournament will be played in the 50-overs format. This serves as a crucial preparation platform for five out of the six participating teams, excluding Nepal, ahead of the ODI World Cup, which is scheduled to commence on October 5 in India.
According to the schedule, regardless of their position in the first round, Pakistan will be designated as A1, India as A2, Sri Lanka as B1, and Bangladesh as B2. If Nepal and Afghanistan qualify for the Super Four stage, they will replace the teams that are eliminated from their respective groups. In Group A, either Pakistan or India will make way for Nepal and Afghanistan, while in Group B, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will be replaced by these two teams.
The Asia Cup 2023 promises to be an exciting tournament, with fierce competition among the top cricketing nations in the region. Fans can look forward to thrilling matches as the teams battle it out for the coveted title.
