India made a strong start on Day 1 of the 2nd Test against Sri Lanka. After winning the toss and opting to bat first, the visitors dominated long periods of play driven by a brilliant century from Devdutt Padikkal and half-centuries from Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal.
Top Order Lay the Platform
Captained by Shubman Gill, India opted to bat after winning the toss. Yashasvi Jaiswal provided early momentum with crisp off-side drives and confident footwork. Despite KL Rahul getting caught off Asitha Fernando for 18, Jaiswal played aggressively before falling for 45 to an excellent delivery by Asitha that clipped his off stump.
Devdutt Padikkal's Mastery & Gill's Fifty
Devdutt Padikkal anchored the innings with composure. Alongside skipper Shubman Gill, the duo put together a solid century stand. Gill worked his way to a patient half-century (50 off 108 balls) before poking at a wide ball from Asitha Fernando to edge behind to Niroshan Dickwella.
Padikkal continued smoothly, using his back-foot cuts and wristy drives to punish loose deliveries. He reached his century with great temperament before finally being bowled by a sharp-turning delivery from spin bowler Keshwara.
